This is a great opportunity and worthy cause to show our solidarity and support for our close West Papuan neighbours. Herman Wainggai, a West Papuan Refugee and Independence Advocate will share his personal journey to freedom and the struggle and brutal persecution his people face by the Indonesian Military and Police.
Herman spent 3 years in Indonesian prisons for peacefully protesting Indonesian Police & military brutality including rape, torture and murder. In 2006 he and a group of Papuan refugees fled to Australia in a longboat, where all were finally accepted as refugees. In response, the Indonesian President Sushilo Bambang Yudhoyono phoned Australia’s Prime Minister John Howard to urge that the refugees be sent back. Further, when Australia granted temporary protection visas to the West Papuan asylum seekers the Indonesian government recalled its ambassador back to Indonesia.
In recent years Herman has been campaigning for Papuan human rights in Washington DC and producing the movie ‘West Papua – a journey to freedom’.
Come and spend some time with a man that has learnt how to stand up to a brutal regime in the face of extreme injustice, yet has maintained a peaceful response showing love for his enemies.
Recent events has made awareness of this issue critical.
